Cynic Concert Review – 8/1/10 – Magic Stick – Detroit, MI
By: DDL
Cynic. You may know the name. They released a masterpiece of an album back in 1993 called Focus. It’s considered a progressive metal/rock classic. Then, they released a demo under another name Portal. After that they vanished for years. Paul Masvidal (guitar, vocals) and Sean Reinert (drums, percussion) were also in another band called Aeon Spoke. Cynic decided to reunite and they did a lot of European festivals and eventually decided to record a new album. That album was Traced In Air. It was released in 2008 to rave reviews. They also just released an EP Re-Traced with four songs re-recorded a little differently also with a brand new track exclusive to the EP.
I happened to catch Cynic on their Re-Traced/Re-Focused Tour here in Detroit.
This was a very special tour because they decided to play the entire 1993 Focus album in its entirety. They also played most of Traced In Air, a Portal song, and an acoustic version of Integral Birth off Traced In Air/Re-Traced EP.
The show was mind blowing. There are no other words to describe it. They sounded flawless. The set was about 80 minutes. Each song sounded exactly like it did on its respective album. I’ve seen a lot of concerts and I must say this was one of the most perfect and flawless sets I’ve ever seen.
You owe it to yourself to check Cynic out on tour if you like progressive metal/rock. They’re really something to see live.

I agree, Cynic is an amazing band. I saw them in LA, at their first gig of this US headline tour, and they were incredible. Relentlessly great musicians.

Cynic are some of the best musicians in the business today. This is one of the best reviewed tours in recent memory.
We’re going to do our very best to keep coverage up on the heavier acts for those of you that dig this material. As far as Cynic goes, I’m a huge fan, so it benefits me too.

I was never a fan of this band but as someone that appreciates talented musicians, check these guys out.
Magic Stick is a stupid name for a club.

Why does Andrew’s name cup as (author) when he did not write this?

It’s just a small technical glitch that’s been resolved. Thank you for brining it to our attention.
